Adele's Surprise Appearence in the City of Angels

Adele wowed fans and celebrities alike with a pre-Grammy Awards gig in Los Angeles on Friday, her first from the Californian city for four years.

The Brit When We Were Young superstar announced the concert on Wednesday, and tickets were provided to people from the California area who had been previously registered together with her website.

The lucky fans were treated for an array of her old and new hits inside 16-song set at venue The Wiltern, with celebrities including Jennifer Lawrence, Woody Harrelson, Tom Hanks, Emma Stone and rumoured new couple Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom also within the excited audience.

Introduced on stage by her friend and fellow Brit, The Late Late Show host James Corden, Adele opened together with her recent worldwide hit Hello, her first single in the new album 25.

Adele chatted on the crowd involving songs including Set Fire towards the Rain and Someone Like You, revealing that she'd visited Disneyland on Tuesday with son Angelo, after which joked around the venue being much too hot. "I seem like my make-up's on the verge of slide off me (sic) face!" she laughed, as outlined by Billboard.com.

She then apologised with the $50 (£31.25) expense of tickets, telling fans she wanted these to be much cheaper.

"Sorry when it was a pain within the a** obtaining the tickets. Did any one you pay a lot more than $50 for some of these tickets?" she asked. "They (the record company) were all saying, 'Oh let's do $150 a ticket, ok last one! So-n-so said that…' I said $50.

"I would've (charged) less, but my record label is spending money on this. As you can see because of the set, we've uses up money," she joked, referencing the sparse backdrop.

Before a final song from the night, Adele asked her fans to supply a rendition of her hit Hello. Desperate to capture the second on video, she ran backstage, still holding her microphone, and pleaded with people to lend her a mobile phone.

"I require some kind of recording device. Hang on!" she said. "Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait! Someone give me a mobile phone! Oh occur, there's like 20 f**king people back here, give me a cell phone!"

Joining in at the end from the song, Adele told the competition to thunderous applause, "That was f**king amazing. That would have been a whole f**king song! You are amazing!... That was amazing. Thank you."

She finished her triumphant set along with her 2011 hit Rolling within the Deep, with an enthusiastic Jennifer Lawrence was seen dancing along towards the song with Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone and Orlando Bloom.

Celebrities were quick to praise the Brit's surprise gig, with Tom Hanks posting a gushing message on Twitter. "Adele. What a show. What a voice. What a woman. What an artist. What a date! Thank you. Hanx," he captioned a photo from the singer on stage. His wife Rita Wilson later shared a photo of her and Tom meeting Adele and her boyfriend Simon Konecki on Instagram.com, corresponding with Adele, "There aren't any words. Only thanks."

"I know you're gonna rock the WILTERN (sic) tonight girl," wrote Lady Gaga, while Josh Groban tweeted, "Finally have got to see the transcendent @Adele tonight. That voice live can be a world treasure... !!!!!!"

The singer's world tour begins in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on 1 March.
